The piece Primal Square came from my interest in the basic human need find meaning beyond the physical realm.. It is about numerology, probability and chance and change. Each piece was painted with a background bright colors and symbols, "zeros" and "ones" (binary code) and other symbols. Then each panel was covered completely with the dark brown paint obscuring all detail and while wet the small squares were scraped away to show through to the underpainting, like windows to the past or "beyond the physical" top layer.

The numerology and placement of the squares comes from the ancient chinese book of wisdom, the "I ching" or book of changes in which sets of three "0's" and "1's" called trigrams are placed together to make sets of six "hexagrams", there are 64 combinations of these trigrams thus making 64 hexagrams or 64 panels.. The beauty in how the "I ching" is written and used as an oracle is that the reader can make it mean just about anything he/she wants it to mean...Which is a great metaphor for all art because no matter what I intend the viewer takes their own experience and makes it mean what they want it to mean.. and I love that!!
